“Get paid to” programs (or GPTs as they are often called) are one of the many ways hat WAHMs (Work at Home Mothers) can make money from home. If you’ve been looking for a work at home job, you’ve no doubt run across ads that claim that you can make money by reading e-mails, answering surveys, and trying free samples. The good news is many WAHMs make money doing those exact things. Plenty of people earn free cash online simply and legitimately every day (including myself.) If you’re not into it 100% though don’t count on earning enough to pay your rent. Part timers, however, can indeed earn enough (significant amount) to pay a few bills around the house here and there.

The bad news is that this particular industry is rife with scammers. If you are interested in getting involved with GPT programs, you’ll have to do your homework and take special precautions to protect yourself and your computer. Stick with those programs that have been recommended to you by a reliable source. All the GPT programs listed on this site (www.DrGPT.com) have been tested by me to be 100% trustworthy legitimate paying sites.

For many WAHMs, the GPT programs are a fun and easy way to earn some extra money when they need it. People who have experience with the programs recommend that you never rely wholly on GPTs to pay your monthly bills. But they can be a perfect solution to earn money for a special occasion or holiday shopping.

Just what are GPT programs? They fall into three basic categories: get paid to read e-mail, get paid to fill out surveys and get paid to try products. Each type has its own pros and cons. Before you start any GPT program, you should take some steps to protect your personal information. You will be required to give your personal information for many of these programs and the less you actually say about yourself the better.

To start you should register a separate e-mail address for your GPT purposes. Many programs can result in a lot of spam mail, so you’ll want to keep your main e-mail address separate.

Get paid to read e-mail programs will pay you a few cents for receiving e-mail and clicking on links. Normally these e-mails offer special deals on products or encourage you to sign up for programs. Sometimes, depending on the e-mail program, you will get more money or “points” if you try the offer. You are not obligated to try the offers, and will get paid a small amount just for clicking on the link inside of the e-mail. There are many popular paid e-mail companies. Do some research before you sign up for a program to make sure that people are actually getting paid. Try not to sign up for too many programs at once or your GPT e-mail address will be swamped.

Getting paid to fill out surveys works in a similar way. You will sign up for a survey program and then fill out some personal information. You will be matched to surveys that are looking for the opinions of people in your income bracket, of your age or one of several different qualification factors. Depending on the company, you will get paid per survey, or completing surveys will earn you points that can later be redeemed. Just as with get paid to read e-mail programs, do research on survey companies before you sign up. There are hundreds out there but only a handful are worth the time and effort.

Finally there are get paid to try products programs. These programs pay significantly more than the other GPT programs. However, you will be required to pay anywhere from $1 to $10 to try the products. When you use these kinds of programs, you have to be careful to take complete records of what you will be receiving and when you need to cancel service or return the item. Most of the time you will be registered for recurring billing for a monthly service, which can be canceled within the initial 7 to 14 days if you are so inclined. You can call the companies and cancel the service, yet still be paid for signing up for the GPT program if your find the product or service undesirable.

Below are my suggested criteria to consider when evaluating which GPT sites to join and frequent. Also included are obvious red flags indicative of potential sites with issues that should be avoided. These criteria (below) are listed in the order in which I, myself, prefer to choose my favorite sites – your “order” may differ depending on your own preferences and requirements:

Site Stability, Honesty, & Financial Health / Backing
Sites that look great and have great advertisements with superlative headlines boasting that they are the best site may not necessarily be the best choice. I will do you little good to join a nice looking site, spending time earning to reach a significant internal account points balance only to find that you’ve ultimately been duped into a basically unsupported long-forgotten stagnant site that never pays out not matter what you do – chances are such a site is being milked by an administrator that:

has lost interest in the site and rarely bothers to take the necessary steps to pay its members but leaves the site standing in the hopes that one day seen he/she may again suddenly start to care; and/or

is disorganized or incompetent resulting in incessant excuses, delays, partial payments, and general headaches from the member’s perspective to such an extent that the site is basically useless as a reliable source of income; and/or

has become financially insolvent though he/she may have every intention of eventually paying the site’s members, never seems to have enough money when the time comes; and/or

tends to delete accounts, steal from (reduce) the member’s account balance, never (or rarely) approve or credit member’s offer completions, or ban members when they have or are about to reach the minimum cash out requirement amount (playing dirty tricks); and/or

is unscrupulous (fraudulent to a criminal extent) by allowing new members to join and present members to continue completing surveys and offers without any intention of ever paying those members for the work they have done while still collecting regular payments from the sponsors and pocketing it.

How can you tell if the site you are evaluating may suffer from stability issues? Look for red flags that may merit further investigation such as:

Sites offering only private support options (a BIG tip off!) such as “contact us” forms or a private “support ticket” system while providing no publicly visible support such as a proper open support forum where gripes from present members can be openly read and evaluated (or having an open support forum but suppressing (deleting posts / banning complaining members) all gripes/complaints regularly; and/or

Sites with an excessive amount of scam complaints posted elsewhere on the internet. Take the time to Google the site name and take a look at what others are saying about the site. Granted even the most legitimate and stable sites will inevitably have a few gripes out there from people who will never be satisfied (such as former members banned for fraud, etc.) or past issues that have been dealt with and solved but remain public because they reside within Google’s cached results or the original complaint had never been removed from the source web site; and/or

Sites listed on GPTBoycott.com’s Watch List or worse, Boycott List. GPTBoycott is an industry standard member complaint based voluntary pseudo-accreditation program offering trusted credentials to stable, paying sites while revoking credentials and publicizing issues related to sites with serious stability problems and those with documented allegedly fraudulent activities perpertrated on members. GPTBoycott publishes a list of programs supporting their efforts and also has a rather informative and popular open discussion forum.

A GPT or “Get Paid To” site (sometime called a “free paid survey” or “offer” site) pays its registered members rather substantially to perform specific online tasks such as responding to a simple survey, completing a free trial offer, ordering products & services you may already be seeking, visiting sponsor’s web sites, viewing advertisements, signing up for newsletters, and such.

GPT sites are an excellent source of easy spare-time money. These sites will definitely give you a healthy boost of income proportional to the time and effort you put into them. Many, including myself, have made GPT sites their full-time job replacement allowing you to be your own boss while paying the rent and all of life’s expenses with money to spare (though getting to this stage requires much devotion, time, attention, and the wisdom that comes over time in exploring and getting an expert feel for how these sites operate.)

Many of the trial and purchase offers are for products and services you would normally buy – Only at GPT sites they pay you an incentive to try or buy them through their sponsors. It’s almost like shopping at a steep VIP discount. Their sponsors pay them for the marketing exposure and they pay you for your time and consideration – it’s really that simple.

By giving your opinion and through your feedback on the free paid surveys the GPT site sponsors (many are large well known corporations) gain valuable insight into a potential customer’s thought process that assists them in making improvements and getting a feel for a potential new product’s probable initial reception. GPT sites are valuable resources for sponsors to do informal cost-effective market research at a moments notice without a lot of lead time, preparation, and personnel resources used.

The vast majority of legitimate GPT sites will never ask you for any sort of registration fee. If a site does ask you for money up front (rare, but they are still out there) then I would advise you to leave that site and place it in your “something’s fishy about this site” category. There are, however, many free to join GPT sites that offer optional membership upgrades that offer benefits such as free referral credits, increased referral percentage structure, advertising package discounts, and exclusive offers – I would advise you to get a feel for the site for a while (several weeks) before/if you opt to pay for an optional upgrade.

Now please don’t confuse the GPT sites (sometimes referred to as PTSU “Paid To Sign Up” sites) with your standard extremely low paying PTC (Paid To Click), PTP (Paid To Post), or PTR (Paid To Read ) sites that are generally a big monotonous unhappy waste of time – and usually only offer fractions of a penny per action. These are definitely not the GPT sites I speak of.

Coming from an information technology / web site development background and having discovered the wealth that can be earned several years ago from marketing incentive / reward / get paid to / paid survey (GPT) sites such as GreedyClicks. I have discovered several simple and little-known strategies, tips, and tricks for maximizing online marketing efforts:

1. Many search engines and indices (plural for index) will allow you to submit your whole referral or affiliate link (though most wont.) Most notably Google and MSN Live Search ( I knew someone that got his referral link for another site posted on the FIRST PAGE of Google and made a killing in referrals!) One quick way to test a search provider if you have been promoting your referral links for some time would be to do a search for your username (usually present at the end of your referral link) and see what the results show. Look for your own referral links listed in the search results. If your referral link shows in its entirety then you know to add that search provider to your list for periodically submitting all of your raw referral or affiliate links directly.

2. Buy or earn yourself a snappy new domain name and have it redirect (the whole domain) to your referral or affiliate link (you don’t even need hosting – just use domain forwarding.) Then promote your new domain to the search engines, indices, forums, and blogs. It helps not having the obvious referral link look. Cheap domain names start at just $1.99 or can be FREE if you know where to look (below):

DomainLagoon | HostingLagoon | URLSavings | AnotherFree | URLFreedom

3. Choose a referral banner that doesn’t give up the whole site URL (or edit/make your own.) Many people will (for some reason) choose to type in the URL manually if they have the benefit of knowing it rather that clicking upon an obvious referral link. Leave them guessing a bit (make it a bit of a mystery) as to what site the banner is speaking of. When speaking of sites in text, refer to them in a way that doesn’t obviously or intuitively disclose the URL (for example, if I was writing about www.GreedyClicks.com, I would say “Greedy Clicks” rather than “GreedyClicks”, or “GreedyClicks.com”.

4. Start blogging about your referral sites / links at Blogger. Blogger is Google based and I’ve found is your best chance at a popular blog with a great Google rank. I’ve noticed that Google regularly favors their own blogs based on their own blog site interface (and it doesn’t hurt to promote this blog to other search engines and indices as well.) Blogger will also host your blog for free seamlessly on your own domain. Another good blog site with max exposure is the eBay based blog. Make an eBay blog and promote it as well.

5. Regularly do a search, as if you knew nothing at all about the subject of the type sites you are promoting. See what pops up. Notice the first site on the list. Notice what they are doing right? …and what you may be doing wrong? (meta tags, keywords, description, etc.) Notice keywords, etc. Improve the quality, quantity, and newness of your textual content regularly. Be honest and open, don’t resort to superlatives and hype wording like “Go to this site and make $500 in an hour” and “fire your boss” (a big turn off and one of the reasons why people may leave your site early.) Morph your site into a closer rendition of the top site and re-submit (another step up the ladder?) …just common sense.

6. If you run your own referral sites… do your homework on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques (freely available all over the web.) Learn about the proper use of META TAGS, robots.txt, and sitemap files. If you are going to do it, do it right! Oh, and don’t use “frames” when building your site (they are not search engine/index friendly – don’t shoot yourself in the foot.)

7. Purchase professional web site promotional services and/or software that will automate your site submission efforts. Don’t get fooled by software / services that say they will promote your site(s) to 30,000 search engines, etc. Chances are 95% of those sites will be Free For All (FFA) sites which likely no human ever looks at (at one time FFA sites increased your “link popularity” – which mattered then – but all respectable search engines and indices have learned to ignore the FFA sites now – seeing their obvious abuse and non-consequence.) Anyways, what’s the point? Most FFA sites want you to manually confirm your entry nowadays (want 80 or 90 emails to respond to personally – go ahead and submit to useless FFA sites.)

8. Be persistent, but DON’T SPAM the search engines/indices. A good interval for me (with good luck) has been to submit at least once a month (but NOT more.) A lot of engines/indices will quickly add you to their trashcan if you bug them more (not a good place to be.)

9. Join a link exchange network (thousands out there.) This may help significantly depending upon the quality (interest generated – staying power) of your own site (compared to others in the network.)

10. Take over an already popular web site domain that has expired (get them cheap if you know where to look) and post your referral links / banners there. Enjoy instant popularity with the twist of people not knowing what hit them once they’ve arrived.

11. Think of a unique niche of people that might appreciate the product, service, or site you are promoting and post to forums covering that niche. …for example, people with some sort of social anxiety (such as agoraphobia, etc.) or other homebound people might want to learn about online money making from home sites , etc. Post to social forums covering that niche topic.

12. Double or triple the impact of your message forum posts by promoting your posts to the search engines and indices as well… Yes, after writing posts to a particular forum I always try to go back, gather the “permalink”s (or URLs) of the specific posts I wrote in notepad and spend a bit of time afterwards adding them to the search providers to crawl.

There are many people and site owners that will try and push their own particular advice on proper browser cookie handling upon you – unfortunately most of the popular advise out there is patently WRONG. Using an improper cookie handling procedure will likely cause you to miss credit for offers that would have normally credited if only you new the secrets behind the offer tracking and crediting system.

Before I go on… If you have no idea what a browser cookie is I would suggest that you take a look at The Unofficial Cookie FAQ or browse on over to the Wikipedia article on the HTTP cookie.

Some people and anti-spyware software would have you believe that all browser cookies are bad (especially “tracking cookies”.) When it comes to paid survey, incentive, GPT, and PTS sites (hereafter referred to as the “incentive site” for the sake of simplicity) cookies are your very best friend.

How do incentivized offers track? Most use a combination of tracking cookies, the single pixel gif, a sub-id containing your site membership information, and your unique ip address.

When you click on an offer/survey the incentive site’s software will note your click.

You then will be sent to the offer’s url with a sub-id usually containing your incentive site user name appended to the end of the url. Though is may seem instantaneous and direct on pretty much any connection other than dial-up, your browser is actually being sent on a wild goose chase of many different urls to get to your final destination (incentive sites use sponsor (or “CPA” / “affiliate”) networks as a source of their offers – those sponsor networks usually get their offers from other bigger sponsor networks.) The only way to properly make sure that everyone the should be paid for your “lead” will be paid is to send you through a daisy-chain of successive URLs (each noting and crediting themselves your lead.)

Ok, you arrive at the survey/offer. You fill out information, make a purchase, or perform whatever “action” is required to generate credit. This is where the tracking cookie and single pixel gif come into play. Once the action is performed then you are usually sent to a confirmation page that will place a cookie on your computer eventually reporting to the original incentive site that you have indeed completed the required action for credit.

Another reporting method is the mysterious single pixel gif. This is a uniquely named image (picture) file that is so small (1 pixel by 1 pixel) that it is invisible to you that is placed on the confirmation page. The gif is uniquely named so that it specifically and only refers to you specifically. The offer’s web server knows that you have completed an action when a request is made to “show” that one pixel gif (known as the gif “firing” in the industry.)

If the offer site notices that you already have a cookie on your system from a previous session at that site (indicating that you are NOT a “unique lead”) then it may internally note this, allow you to continue, though ultimately report to the incentive site that you are not qualified for the incentive (ouch!) The same goes for if you are recognized by your ip address or entered information such as your name, email address, etc.) Your ip address also plays a part in identifying if your are within the required geographic location for that offer.

Once you are done viewing/completing the survey/offer, close browser window of leave the site, and end up back on the original incentive site then the tracking cookie reports that you have or have not qualified for your incentive.

Most all of the offers are on the up-and-up. But, always keep your guard up and always read the fine print! A very few offers come with surprises that may turn out to be a headache for the unwary. In my online travels I have run across offers that seem too good to be true until you read the fine print.

Here are a few snags to look out for:

Offers that state in the fine print that you are signing up for some sort of service (usually voice mail, or the like) that will be billed on your telephone bill (yes, they CAN do this – even if you give them the wrong number! — they'll look you up and "correct" your obvious error (smile)) This practice is called "cramming" you phone bill (though in most cases YOU are actually signing up to be billed if you read the fine print.) You can read a bit more on cramming here (FCC link.) My advice is to always read the fine print and call your telephone service provider (AT&T, etc.) to "Block Third Party Billing" (beforehand.)

Offers that are "free trials" that charge you some nominal fee (like a buck or two) during the trial period but if you don't cancel within the trial period you will be charged full price (usually a much greater cost) or that your credit card will be billed on a recurring basis until you cancel (Argh!) Again, read the fine print! Some free trial offers may make it difficult, laborious, or impossible to cancel. Watch out! Free/low cost trial offers that turn out to be extremely difficult to cancel (some customer service numbers run perpetually busy, or put you on hold for hours, etc. …or some web site based cancellation links just lead you to an "error".) Read the fine print. Save all copies of emails you receive. Print out any specifics such as login info, account numbers, offer agreements and terms of service (TOS), etc. that are presented on the screen. Print and keep a hardcopy file of all confirmation screens and emails!

Offers that ask for credit card or other private financial information without presenting you with a secure server. In Internet Explorer, you will see a lock icon in the Security Status bar. The Security Status bar is located on the right side of the Address bar. The certificate that is used to encrypt the connection also contains information about the identity of the website owner or organization. You can click the lock to view the identity of the website. If you are being asked for any private financial information without them taking minimal precautions to protect that information (by using a secure connection) then move on – don't give them any information!

Cell phone offers that have you enter your mobile phone number, wait for a text (sms) message containing a pin number or password, and then have you enter the number in back on the web site. They will call this "confirmation". Usually, what you actually are doing by confirming your pin number is giving them permission to add you to a subscription service that will bill your cell phone account some amount ($9.99, $15.99, $29.99!) on a regular basis until you cancel. Always read the fine print! Know what you are signing up for. To avoid costly mistakes you may want to contact your mobile phone service provider beforehand to see if they offer some sort of subscription service blocking / 3rd party billing blocking service (beforehand.)

With such a diverse reading audience I wouldn’t presume to declare that I know which sites, or which types of sites are best for everyone. I, myself, do however have a rather grounded set of qualities I like to see in GPT sites I frequent. For your consideration (in order):

Don’t EVER Pay to Get Paid – Yes, you may have seen this said in various ways throughout this site and others. Honest, legitimate GPT sites never require payment for registration nor will they require you to purchase an account upgrade to enjoy the full benefits of the site. If you encounter a site that requires any sort of payment related to your GPT site member account I would suggest that you stop to ponder what makes this site tick.

The GPT business model allows a wide enough profit margin for both the member and the site to earn a rather substantial income while providing the sponsors with a worthwhile bang for their buck.

If a GPT site requires payment then it says to me that the inside site content and the incentive opportunities it displays may not be as fully developed as the webmaster’s urge to make a quick buck on people paying to become a member of the site.

This also goes for sites selling lists of GPT sites C’mon people, just Google. There is plenty of information posted freely all over the web on the subject of legitimate GPTs.

Low (or No) Minimum Cash Out – I truly don’t understand why GPT sites that have a required minimum cash out amount of greater than ten-dollars ($10) still exist – shouldn’t they have been extinct by now? There are plenty of established legitimate GPTs out there that are now sporting minimums of less than two-dollars ($2) – some next generation GPTs now don’t even bother having a minimum cash out amount that must be reached before requesting payment – that’s right no minimum cash out! Not only don’t you have to worry about leaving any of your hard earned money behind in the site’s hands (yes, it’s YOUR money the minute you earned it), but I find it’s simply a much more rewarding experience not having to deal with minimums.

Don’t Wait for Your Money – Instant gratification is where it’s at today (especially in these demanding economic times.) There is a whole new crop of next generation GPTs out there (most from long established trusted networks) today that have raised the bar on the GPT site industry by offering instant (as in NOW!) automatic payments (most also with no minimum cash out!) How long it takes to get paid is now one of the first crucial pieces of information I search for when evaluating a newly discovered GPT – this comes after a few past encounters with sites that will only pay you after days, weeks, or even months of waiting (for no apparent reason.)

…to be continued.
